International Women’s Day is coming up! Let’s determine the history of International Women’s Day and the actions people take on this day!
International women’s day is on March 8th every year. It started in order to celebrate the women’s achievement regardless of the divisions, whether they are national, ethnic, economic or political.
How did it start?
Thousands of women garment workers came out to the streets in New York to claim equal rights and better working conditions. They protested against long work hours, low payment and lack of voting rights.
The socialist Party of America declared February 28th as Women's day.
Clara Zetkin, a German Marxist theorist, activist suggested celebrating Women’s day internationally, at the international conference of working women in Denmark, 1910.
The first international women’s day started the following year in 1911.
This day is also considered as an official holiday in at least 20 countries including Ukraine and Cambodia.
